Spring in Groix

Account of a sunny and warm stay

In Groix, winter is slowly fading away to make way for the freshness of spring. The plants are dressed in a vibrant green while flowers are budding on the paths, in front of the houses and in the gardens.

Walks and exploring the villages

With its 15km² and flat terrain, the island of Groix is a true strolling paradise With the temperatures being so pleasant, we quickly found ourselves covering considerable distances from one place to another. Taking advantage of the gentle sunrise to start the day, it took us two hours to walk along the coastal paths between Port Tudy and the Pen Men lighthouse…

By bike, however, you can cover longer distances. From the village of Kerlard – where you will have previously enjoyed a galette au lard des thoniers* at the crêperie de l'Écurie – you can continue your journey by passing through wooded, sometimes arid paths, while following the wild coast to reach the Trou de l'Enfer.

*Tuna fishermen's bacon is a specialty of Groix, you can buy it at the butcher in Bourg.

Our next destination: the village of Locmaria. We'll pass by the water tower, making sure not to miss the famous Parcabout of Groix. This unique concept in the world of acrobatic adventure parks was created by experienced former sailors under the name of Black Dog®, It's a necessary stop. At least to see.

The season is starting for retailers.

But spring in Groix is also the time to enjoy sunny terraces! Many establishments are starting their season and offering lovely views. Arriving in the village of Locmaria, we quenched our thirst with a refreshing drink and a coffee at Pop's Tavern. We then sail through this charming labyrinthine village, the first village to have been established on Groix.

At the end of the day, after visiting local craft shops in the town center, our stroll will end at the panoramic terrace of Les Garçons du Port. This bar and restaurant, located halfway up Port Tudy, is renowned for its lively atmosphere. Inside, you'll find a foosball table and a pool table, offering the perfect opportunity to challenge your friends or family!

Dinner in Bourg or Port Tudy

Back to our lovely bed and breakfast Located near the town center, we planned our dinner. Restaurants and crêperies are mainly located in the town center and Port Tudy. That evening, we chose Chez Sandrine crêperie, situated near the town center. Sandrine served us excellent buckwheat galettes made with local ingredients.

And what about the second part of the evening, you ask? At the start of the climb up to Port-Tudy, you'll find two pubs where locals and visitors alike gather in a warm and friendly atmosphere. The first, Ty Beudeff, is an authentic tavern, a true institution known to sailors from all over the world. Ask any seafaring friend; they'll certainly know the place! At its sister establishment, the Auberge du Pêcheur, you'll find two bars: one on the terrace and the other, a pub, inside. The house specialties: whiskies, infused rums, and Irish coffee.

A small beach?

Finally, as one might have hoped with the island microclimate On the island of Groix, the weather was perfect throughout our stay! We enjoyed relaxing one afternoon at Grands Sables, The famous convex beach that shifts over the years. Also, in a much more peaceful setting than in peak season, we experienced a true taste of summer. The whiteness of the sand is no myth, and the "endless" view of the Breton coast is absolutely breathtaking.

Ultimately, the spring in Groix It's an opportunity to recharge in a welcoming setting, enjoy lush green and flower-filled landscapes, and meet the locals when they're most available. But whatever the season, the small island of Groix is appreciated for what it truly is: a rich and inspiring place. To learn more about Groix, you can read our article on the History of Groix.
