Located on the west coast of Morbihan, Groix is a small island with a population of a few thousand. It is experiencing a severe water shortage.

The causes of this water scarcity

The main cause of this water scarcity on the island of Groix is the severe drought the region has been experiencing for some time. Indeed, rain has been long overdue for the area. This shortage is causing the soil to dry out.

The lack of rain plaguing the island of Groix is caused by winds that push all the rain towards central Brittany. As a result, this central area receives abundant rainfall while the coasts of Groix remain deprived of it.

The fears of the inhabitants of Groix Island

Since the beginning of the year, the Port Melin reservoir has been below its usual water level for this time of year. As a result, the island has been declared on drought alert. Residents fear a repeat of the 1989 drought, when they had to have water brought in by boat every day. With the upcoming holiday season and the arrival of tourists, water demand is expected to double, posing a significant problem for the island.

Measures put in place to save water

Several measures have been implemented to conserve water and combat this drought. Filling swimming pools is now prohibited on Groix. Watering gardens and vegetable patches is prohibited between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. You must still use the minimum amount of water necessary for watering. A 25% reduction in water consumption is also being applied to businesses. Everyone must make an effort regarding their water consumption so that the island of Groix can get through this difficult period.
